ABOUT ME
I had much interest in Art right from my Girlhood. My father is a great artist. It was a special aspect to me. If anybody visited our home, I drew them as portrait. As I was in the circumstances of Cholamandal Artists' village and when I used to visit the senior artists' homes, there I had chance to listen the mediums like Batik, Terracotta paintings, sculptures, etc.
Moreover, during my school holidays, I had great chance to listen closely the works of my father like metal works viz. Repousse work. It inspired me very much. I observed its techniques. Then I started to assist my father in his Repousse work. Whenever I had doubts, my father cleared it. While I was studying Secondary education, with my father's guidance I gained practical knowledge in metal relief and after completion of graduation, I moulded on to copper metal reliefs, sculptures and paintings as a full-time profession.
With a view to turn my career, I intended to do a small work. I drew a design on a piece of metal. It came well. It inspired me very much. I started to design and make some handicrafts life bowls, pendants, ear rings. Then I started to create small miniatures like metal Relief. My first miniature metal relief was LORD GANESHA which was bought by a Foreigner. Later I started to design the relief work individually.
Then more ambition entered into me and began the metal sculpture work and developed my ability. Though in the beginning it was difficult to make it on copper metal, I did not ignore it. Then I started for painting works and created specially. Metal sculpture is a part of our Indian tradition and all of our idols, temple pillars, doors, ceiling and walls are all made up of Bronze with Embossed work on it. In these types of ancient technology, I used to make sculptures in contemporary style. Actually, I want all my works to represent real images but I don't reproduce them exactly. I want an artistic expression to come out of them.
I was influenced in Traditional folk art, African designs, Tribal art and animals, birds, dancing fish. I create mythological to abstract characters like Lord Ganesha, Krishna, Hanuman, Human and common themes. I am always fascinated by peacock. Especially I use enamels in my work. My works are always seemed to be decorative. In sculpture, I am doing frontal sculpture and the dimension work also. I never follow the same style but I use to explore them in different styles.
I am over THREE DECADES in the Art field.
I have participated in many Group shows, Two Man Shows and Three solo shows. My sculptures were taken part in many Auctions. In 1991 & 2019 I received “TAMILNADU STATE AWARD” at LALIT KALA ACADEMY.
My collections are all over India and abroad. I had executed many sculptures in many sizes worldwide.
I am a Executive Board Member of Progressive Painters' Association at Cholamandal Artists' Village, Chennai.
